Discussion Questions
- How does your library currently handle overdue items, and what parts of the automated overdue → assumed lost → lost workflow are most confusing or time consuming for staff?
- What criteria do you use when deciding whether to manually mark an item lost before automated processes take over? (For example: patron honesty, likelihood of return, or the item’s value.)
- How do you communicate with patrons about lost, assumed lost, or damaged items, and what strategies have been most effective in preventing frustration or confusion?
- What is your library’s approach to handling damaged items, given that the system does not support automated workflows for damage? (Do you use consistent internal guidelines for “billable” vs. “still circulates”?)
- How often does your library review Missing, Lost, Lost Paid, or Claims Returned lists in Blue Cloud Analytics, and what improvements could help streamline this review process?
- How do staff currently track and manage items checked out to system user accounts (e.g., repair, cataloging, programming)? What challenges do you foresee with the new cleanup schedule for dormant system user items?
- Does your library have internal policies for when to reorder a lost or missing item versus when to discard it? If not, what factors (cost, demand, relevance, age) should guide these decisions?
- What improvements or additional resources would you like to see in the MSC Knowledge Base or training materials to help your staff more confidently navigate the item life cycle?
