Public Library Standards

The Montana Public Library Standards are adopted by the State Library Commission into the Administrative Rules of Montana (ARM).

These rules, or ARM, have been updated over the years as professional standards, funding structures, and other factors have changed.

The Montana Public Library Standards constitute the basic level that public and accredited tribal college libraries must meet to receive state aid per capita and/or library federation funding.

ARM Summary

The following chapters of the ARM will be the focus of this course.

Skim through the language of each subchapter.

These rules were last updated in 2022 and 2024.

Matching Up

Knowing the public library standards can help you use them effectively to plan services and report on progress in meeting the standards.

This activity will test your memory of what you have just read.

You can retry as many times as you like to match up the word or phrase into the sentence. There are more words to choose from than the number of boxes.

After you've finished, move on to the next section of the course: Standards in Practice.
