  • Welcome and Introduction

This course is designed as an introduction to library services for public library staff working with youth. Whether you are already working in a library or just starting out in a new youth services position, this content will help you consider why library services focusing specifically on youth are important, how to collect appropriate materials, the types of services and programs you can provide to your patrons, and the importance of outreach services.

    An accompanying workbook has also been provided for you to complete as you progress through the course. This workbook is designed to expand on the lessons covered in this overview as well as the breakout age sections and has many activities, reflection prompts, and more detailed information that will help you develop strong library services for youth. You can download the workbook using the file below. Workbook completion is not required, but is recommended. 

    This Youth Services Basics course is part of a larger Youth Services Curriculum. In the future, there will be courses focused on specific age groups in the following three sections:

This workbook is a fillable PDF, which means that you can download and save a copy to your computer, and fill in the blanks using a keyboard, or you may choose to print it out and write your notes. No matter how you use it, it is designed for you to refer back to as needed.
